SOAK YOUR WORDS WITH SOUL

Welcome to…
The Soul Writing Studio

Women-only writing sessions that

soak your words with soul

Light a candle. Grab your cup of tea. And throw a blanket on your knees.

We start with a prompt...

Notice your criticism come up.

Let it go.

Then write without stopping - forget about grammar and spelling. Focus on what’s popping and sizzling inside of you. And feel your writing take twists and turns from the stirrings in your heart.

Experience a supportive space (on Zoom) for women to write together and hold space for each other with kindness and creativity.

No judgment, no censoring, no critiquing.

It’s a writing process focused on deep play rather than polished results.

When you write, you stop the clock on your life and give yourself time to reflect.

So come and dip your pen into a creative practice and a meditation practice developed by Jane Brunette at WritingFromTheSoul.net

Soul Writing Sessions are for women who need a creative practice and a good therapy session.

How it works...

We start with a prompt:

Jen Baxter, copywriter

We start by reading a poem, a quote or an inspirational speech. Each person grabs a phrase or a word from there as their first prompt.

We set a timer for 10 minutes and write without stopping. The only rule is that your hand never leaves the page (or the keyboard) and you don’t stop. No thinking about grammar, spelling, or punctuation.

We read out loud: Timer goes off. Your pen goes down.

Each woman reads out loud - slowly.

The listeners are silent -  simply holding space for the reader.  There's no commenting, critiquing, or even a, "that was beautiful" at the end. We simply stay silent and then let the next women in the group read out loud.

We catch a line from each reading, a concept borrowed from the amazing Marcella Allison. We actively listen to each other and jot down a line or a phrase that resonates with us.

We close with Read Backs: again, borrowed from Marcella Allison, like a women's chorus we close by reading out loud - at the same time - the lines we've caught from each piece. You hear the symphony of voices sharing our collective, wisdom, struggles, humor, and pain.

What people are saying

When you write you stop the clock on your life and give yourself time to reflect. So I would really look forward to holding space for other women who would express some of those things that I didn’t even realize I had been thinking about too.
— Becky Wicks
This really helped me get a sense of my own growth without worrying about being a perfectionist or appearing positively in what I was writing. It gave me a chance to see the ways I’ve grown.
— Sian Bareket

Answers to your burning questions:

What actually happens in a soul writing session?

Magic. Voodoo. Occult practices with women only.

🤣 Kidding!

We start with a prompt and freewrite together.

Then slowly go around the circle and read out loud. No commenting, no judging, no complimenting. Everyone but the reader stays silent.

We do this three times and then close the session with a special practice. Which is exactly what makes this Soul Writing Circle so tight. (It’s like a secret society handshake - you have to show up to learn it. Hint: you’ll feel celebrated and supported after.)

Why do a series? (Not just a session)

Because your muse says she’ll only commit to the practice if you do too.

I mean, I haven’t talked to her, buuuut we all know when you commit in advance and put a little cash down, you’re more likely to show up for yourself. Life happens and sometimes you just can’t, so this allows you to change your schedule at a moment’s notice.

When you commit to a studio pass, we’ll have a better idea of the number of people for each session. Which creates a more enjoyable experience for you, the other writers, and your muse. (Whom we love, despite being a flighty little hussy sometimes, no?)

Do I have to be a writer?

Gosh no. This isn’t a college class. There’s no set of rules or any technique involved in soul writing. All you need is to put words on the page. And the willingness to stay open - be present for you to hear your own voice. You’ll feel immersed in a creative community bonded by radical self-care.

⚡️And if you want to take your writing a little further, that’s something we can talk about in our 1-on-1 session. Bonus!

Do I have to read out loud?

Nope. (Look how many things you don’t have to be or do in the Soul Writing Studio. Isn’t that refreshing?)

For each round you can always say “I pass” to reading out loud. But I want to encourage you to embrace this part of the practice because it’s essential to hear your voice and what you’ve written. (It’s something any writer worth their salt would encourage too!)
